What is free form crochet???? Free form is term that is given to a type of multi-stitch, multi directional work, where a fabric is created using many different methods. There are no rules, usually no directions, no wrong or right way to create your fabric. There are as many different approaches to the method as there are artists creating it. I often combine knitting, crochet, and tunisian crochet all in the same piece.
Some suggest that the way to begin is to choose some colors and yarn that you find pleasing to the eye and begin to scrumble ( a scrumble being a small piece of work , consisting of a few different sts and colors). When you have quite a few scrumbles made , start “playing” with them, perhaps placing them together until some inspiration hits. Others suggest creating a magic ball of yarn, consisting of several different colors, of several different lengths , wound together till you have quite a large ball of yarn. Begin working in any stitch that you feel like, changing stitch and direction every time you reach a new color. Another suggestion is to plan a piece first, making a cardboard pattern to place the pieces on so that you can see your creation developing. All these methods are correct, because as I said before, remember, no right or wrong.
Over the years that I have been experimenting with free form, I have developed a somewhat unique approach. I like to make quite a few larger pieces, then surface crochet, and add smaller pieces to fill in and complete my project. I also like working on a base or a lining. This does create a heavier garment, but living in the north east, I do not find this a problem. I also like to choose a multi-colored yarn that I absolutely love, then I pick several or all of the colors in solids to go with it. I choose many textured yarns in the solid colors. I use some plain yarns, such as knitting worsted, then I choose chenilles, mohairs, cottons, nubby stuff, ribbons, any thing that I think will go. Once started, the piece takes on a life of its own, and just grows.
This is the approach I cover in my new video taking you step by step through the process. Even if you only have basic crochet experience, I think my video will help you on you way to “free forming” fun. |
